Ingólfur Arnarson was the first Norseman to come to Iceland to settle down for rest of his life, accompagnied by his wife, Hallveig Fróðadóttir in the year 874 AD. When he got to the coast, he let the gods determine where he should settle by casting his seat pillars into the water. They have been washed ashore at Reykjavík, there he built his first farmstead (as seen in the Saga Museum).
