The Icelanders developed a form of government that was quite unlike those found anywhere else. Most people that came to settle were fleeing the tyranny of kings. The system that emerged in Iceland was a national assembly, called Althing. It had no central or executive body, and the only member who received payment was the Law Speaker. He committed all the country's laws to heart and to preside over the assembly (as seen in the Saga Museum).
